Writing a Will can seem a bit overwhelming. However, it’s fairly simple if you know what decisions you’d like to make.

You may find it useful to write down some information beforehand. If you do, make sure that you take any documents that you’ll need to your appointment with you.

Here are some things that you may want to think about before you write your Will.

Your Assets

It can be useful to write down a list of your assets, to make sure that nothing is forgotten. These could be properties, cars, jewellery or watches, or furniture – basically, anything that’s of value! It could also be handy to write down any debts that you have (e.g. a mortgage), as this is used to calculate the overall value of your estate.

Your Executors

Your executors are the people who will take care of your affairs when you pass away. It’s important to appoint an executor that you trust. This could be a family member or friend, or a professional executor. You can also choose to have one or multiple executors. Consider this in advance, so that you have all of the details that you need.

Your Beneficiaries

Your beneficiaries are the people that you plan to leave your estate to, including any property that you own or other assets. Writing a list of beneficiaries before you come to write your Will can be useful, as it can help you to visualise who will receive what after you’ve passed away.

Your Guardians

If you have any children under eighteen years of age, it’s important that you decide who will take care of them in the event of your death. To do this, you’ll need to name a guardian (or multiple guardians) in your Will. Make sure that you discuss this with any potential guardians in advance to confirm that they’re happy with your choice.

Your Wishes

If you have any additional wishes that you’d like to be carried out after your death, consider writing them down so that they don’t slip your mind. After all, while you can edit a Will at a later date, it’s far easier to make sure it’s right the first time!
